The lighthouse came first
Before Maggie, before the missing harbormaster, before any of it, there was a lighthouse I passed on a foggy drive up the coast. The keeper's cottage had one lit window and no road leading to it.
I pulled over and wrote three lines on the back of a gas receipt. Those three lines became the opening of chapter one.
If you have read it, you know why that window matters. If you have not, the fog is waiting.
